International direct dialling is available on 98 percent of the country’s phones. In an effort to bring communications systems in line with the rest of the world, thousands of digital lines are presently being installed in the major cities each year.

Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL) is the sole provider of fixed telephone services and also provides cellular telephone services through a 40 percent stake in Malawi’s cellular telecommunications company - Telekom Networks Malawi Limited (TNM). Malawi's second mobile phone operator is Celtel Limited.

The Communications Act of 1998 established the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA). MACRA is charged with the responsibility of licensing operators in the areas of posts, broadcasting and telecommunications.

There has been considerable growth in the telecommunications sector where a 50.0 percent growth in active subscribers is estimated for 2005.
